When Left Alone Divorced

Sunday, January 2, 2011

The situation of the divorced people questions and attacks the social ideal of eternal marriage and they must often endure the exclusion and discrimination shown by their married peers...

This situation also makes it more difficult for them to participate into new relationships.

When a couple is faced with separation, feelings of helplessness and frustration appear, almost always affecting both spouses. The members of the couple feel they have failed in something which is very important for the society they live in and, as a result, they are excluded from the social space they previously occupied.

The dissolution of the marriage not only means that the two partners lose their membership at the level of couple, but also at a broader level. In their new life, the divorcee discovers that they can no longer count on many of their old bonds, that they should change the places they used to go to, as well as the activities which used to be conducted in the family. The ex-husband or the ex-wife is the one who alters the image, both with the family and with friends.

On the other hand, new relationships begin to take shape within a social group unknown until then, almost simultaneously. These groups can serve as an aid for those who experience the pain caused by a marriage breaking whether through real or virtual meetings.

In many cases, the first stage following the separation is often characterized by an excessive enthusiasm about making new contacts, as a way to erase the past. This mode of overcoming the separation involves not facing the loss and therefore no access to the possibility of having a future partner. Any process of change requires time, above all, but the divorce sometimes prevents you from seeing this simple reality.

To avoid being locked in this backward and chaotic mode, characteristic of the first stage, it is necessary that each builds their new equilibrium within a new social space.
